Sugar Busters!

Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat

Sugar Busters!

Sugar Busters! is a #1 New York Times Bestseller that brought attention to the harmful effects of sugar. Though the damaging effects of sugar are better known today they were less recognized in 1995 when Sugar Busters! Sugar Busters!was published. In that sense Sugar Busters! was ahead of its time and the book remains relevant today. Sugar Busters! also challenges other commonly held beliefs that remain prevalent today.

The authors of the book (three physicians and a company CEO) do an excellent job explaining and demonstrating how carbohydrates (complex of sugar) affect insulin levels and challenge the notion or myth that a calorie in equals a calorie out (caloric theory) when discussing losing or gaining weight. Sugar Busters! also advances the concept that not all fats are bad. The authors point out that monounsaturated fats are quite healthy and necessary.

They also suggest that cholesterol alone is not a reliable risk factor for cardiovascular disease – something that is being recognized more and more today and include a chapter on diet and cardiovascualar disease explaining the process of arteriosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

The book explains the physiology of digestion and metabolism and the harmful effects of excess insulin in layman terms. Sugar Busters! introduces the glycemic index which we have discussed and referred to frequently on this site. For more information on the glycemic index go to www.glycemicindex.com.

The books makes it easy for the reader to eat healthier. It tells you what foods are acceptable to eat and which foods you should avoid while offering suitable alternatives. The book provides a 14 day meal plan and several recipes including a few for healthy desserts.

Nice features about Sugar Busters! is that the print is decent size and there is a “Layman’s Glossery” at the end of the book.  Though the book is 18 years old it remains timely for anyone looking to improve their health through better nutrition.
