Growth Hormone Replacement in Women
Growth hormone replacement (HGH)Â is not just for men anymore! Many of the reports looking at this hormone are male based and say little if any thing about the benefits in females. We now are quite comfortable with the fact that the aging female can benefit in many ways when all her hormones are supplemented including growth hormone.
HGH is produced in the anterior pituitary gland and secreted in bursts during sleep and after exercise. We can measure its levels by testing for IGF-1. These levels in youth are 600-800 ng/ml with many adults over 50 measuring less than 200 ng/ml. These low levels appear to be the key to our aging process.
Effects of Low HGH levels
There are numerous effects of sub-optimal levels of HGH as we age, it effects us not only physically  but also has an effect on our personality . Once the levels of HGH fall to sub-optimal levels we can see a decrease in muscle and bone strength, a decrease in our energy levels and inability to repair tissue.
We also see a change in memory, concentration and the onset of depression. There is a weight gain of up to 50 lbs, with percent body fat increasing by up to 30 %. Cholesterol, and other lipids become abnormally high which is associated with an increase in cardiac events.
Benefits of Growth Hormone Replacement
One of the most sought after effects in females is thickening of the skin with improved nails and hair growth. While this is nice the other benefits are much more significant to ones health. Body composition is altered with patients losing significant amounts of body fat and increasing lean muscle mass.
Cardiac benefits have been demonstrated with growth hormone replacement, with recent studies showing improvement in heart failure patients. Associated with this is improvement in lipid profile , better exercise tolerance and improved endurance.
Decreasing bone mineral density is  common in the aging female population with associated fractures.HGH supplementation is associated with a significant increase in bone mineral density and improvement in healing of bone fractures. Associated with this is a decrease in the number of hip fractures and vertebral compression fractures.
Human Growth Hormone Replacement
Females who wish to be evaluated for sub-optimal levels of HGH should be seen by a physician well versed in hormone replacement. It is extremely important to replace all hormones that are deficient and not just HGH . When combined with bio-identical estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA we see much better results, with less side effects.
The HGH is most commonly given as a sub-Q daily injection with results being seen after several months of treatment. There may be slight water retention at the initiation of treatment. When this occurs you can consult with your doctor and most times the recommendation will be to decrease the dose and to slowly increase it over time. This almost always resolve the problem.
HGH when combined with a paleolithic diet, exercise can be extremely beneficial to females as they age. We also recommend balancing the other hormones that are deficient and to have close monitoring and frequent discussions with your doctor.
