Embrace Anti Aging Medicine

Anti Aging Medicine Supresses Sands of TimeAnti-Aging Medicine is an exciting new field of medicine focusing on the prevention of disease and the optimization of health.

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine defines the field of Anti Aging Medicine as “a clinical specialty founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases.  It is a healthcare model promoting innovative science and research to prolong the healthy lifespan in humans.”

Anti Aging Medicine versus Conventional Medicine

Traditional or conventional medicine focuses on getting patients out of disease states, while Anti Aging Medicine focuses on moving patients to an optimal state of health, and in the process enable patients to enjoy a  more energetic and productive life.  This is sometimes called “extending the health span”, or the time spent in good health.  Though traditional or conventional medicine has extended the lifespan, many of those additional years are spent in a poor state of health.  Quality of life has not kept up with quantity of life.  Anti Aging Medicine addresses this gap.

Anti Aging Medicine emphasizes the importance of nutrition, exercise, and hormonal balance to prevent and treat disease more than does conventional medicine, which typically emphasizes the role of prescription medication and surgery.  Anti Aging Medicine also focuses on minimizing inflammation which is central to most chronic and degenerative diseases.  In addition, Anti Aging Medicine embraces more readily newer technologies related to stem cells and telomere lengthening that show promise in treating disease and extending the health span.

Anti Aging Medicine focuses on treating the entire individual, rather than a single organ-system so commonly seen with conventional medicine.

Physician Training/Certification

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine offers Fellowship Training to physicians in the areas of Anti Aging Medicine, Regenerative Medicine, Aesthetic Medicine, Integrative Cancer Therapy, and Stem Cell.  The Academy also hosts several medical conferences throughout the year.   The American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine offer a Board Certification Examination.

Anti Aging Medicine is not a recognized specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).  It is not unusual, however, for a field or specialty not to be recognized in its early years by the ABMS.  Despite this, the field of Anti-Aging Medicine is among the fastest growing field in medicine attracting physicians from all medical disciplines with over 24,000 members from 110 countries.
