The Best Measure of Success: How Many People Love You

What is the best measure of success? The earlier in life you answer that question the sooner you can plan your life to achieve that success. It may come as a surprise, but here is what the most successful investor of our time who is worth $87 billion, turned 88 years old this year, and still uses a flip phone, says about success.

I measure success by how many people love me.  Who said that? Warren Buffet.

Of course when you are worth $87 billion it is probably easy for others to love you, right?

how many people love you?So. How many people love you, really really love you?

If the answer is not as many as you would like, you may want to re-evaluate how you relate to others, what you value, and how you spend your time.

Nothing has value until …. it is given away, used, or spent. A million dollars in the bank gets you nowhere. It only has value when used, spent, given away. Until that time it is just a number on a financial statement.

Much the same is true with love. To be loved, you must love. Love has to be spent, invested in others, or given away before it will come back to you in greater return.

Give what you want to receive. If you want more people to love you consider the following features of love.

  • Be kind and generous to others.
  • Give your time.
  • Become an outstanding listener.
  • Bring out the best in others.
  • Be positive.
  • Be hopeful.
  • Be helpful.
  • Be quick to praise and slow to criticize.
  • Be empathetic.
  • When you don’t know what to do, or what to say, just be present.

Money, power, and knowledge can all be useful but all have limitations. Remember the old adage. “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Power may seem nice, but real power involves creating an environment where others can self-actualize. It involves getting others to be all they can be. It is not found in controlling others as so many think – politicians, educators, even parents.

Money can buy a lot of things, but it cannot buy real love. Material things are temporary. Love endures.

So. How many people love you? With the New Year around the corner work on increasing that number!
