Nutritional Supplements to Boost Male Sexual Health

male sexual healthMale Sexual Health Supplements

Want to improve your male sexual health? Do you want to boost your testosterone levels but are afraid of testosterone replacement therapies? Well, you might want to try any number of male sexual health supplements that scientific studies have shown to be helpful in some men.

First, though you need to know a couple things. You need to know your total testosterone, free testosterone, and your estradiol (estrogen) level. Or instead of a free testosterone, you will need to know your bioavailable testosterone and something called SHBG or sex-hormone binding globulin.

The free testosterone is more important than the total testosterone as it represents the testosterone that actually enters the cells. Much testosterone is bound to various proteins and never makes into the cells. Some men have a rather healthy total testosterone but a low free or bioavailable testosterone. There are a couple reasons for this.

First, some testosterone gets converted into estradiol by the aromotase enzyme which largely resides in fat tissues. Some men convert too much testosterone into estradiol driving their free testosterone down.

Secondly, in some men (for a variety of reasons with age being the most common factor) too much testosterone is bound to SHBG also leading to a lower free testosterone level.

Fortunately, there are supplements that can reduce the conversion of testosterone into estradiol and reduce the amount of testosterone bound to SHBG and “free it up” to enter the cells. There are also supplements that can actually boost testosterone production though these generally work better in men under age 40.

And, finally there are supplements that can improve libdio, erectile function, and improve prostate health.

  • Pygeum extract                                               100 mg a day
  • Saw palmetto                                                  320 mg a day

Indole 3-carbinol protects against cancer in men and women by facilitating the breakdown of estrogens down a healthier pathway. It is naturally found in cruciferous vegetables.

To improve male sexual health you don’t need to try all these supplements. I recommend you pick two in each category that pertains to you. Many male sexual health products will have many of these nutritional supplements in one preparation.
