Stem Cells and Anti Ageing: Looking and Feeling Your Best

Stem Cells and Anti Ageing

Changing the Face of Anti Ageing with Stem Cells

Stem cell treatments are changing the face of cosmetic surgery.  Being used more and more in anti ageing medicine to treat heart disease and degenerative joint disease, stem cells have also found a home in cosmetic surgery and skin rejuvenation treatments, and is an evolving anti ageing treatment.

Stem cells have the ability to differentiate or transform into other types of cells and have the potential to regenerate tissue.  Stem cells can repair, rebuild, and rejuvenate human tissue.   Most of us have heard of embryonic stem cells that come from unborn fetuses.  But, there are adult stem cells, too.  One great source for stem cells is fat.  Yes, fat.

Cosmetic surgeons have long transplanted fat for breast augmentation and face lifts.  An observed byproduct of those procedures has been an improvement in skin quality.  It was noticed that skin became thicker and healthier, wrinkles and stretch marks decreased, and sun damage to skin improved.  Fat cell transfers are much less invasive than traditional cosmetic surgery, too, and may yield better long term results.

Stem cells can now be extracted from the fat and be used as fillers in cosmetic surgery.  Not only does the fat add volume to the skin but with time the stem cells become incorporated into the tissue stimulating growth of blood vessels and structural proteins like collagen enhancing the overall appearance of skin.

Some cosmetic surgeons now instruct their patients who undergo liposuction to save their fat for future use, because stem cells have applications that go beyond just looking good.  Stem cells are being used to treat a host of orthopedic problems, especially degenerative arthritis as well as soft tissue injuries to muscles.  Some doctors and patients report dramatic results with the use of stem cells in the treatment of arthritis with significant improvement in pain and better quality of life.

Stem cells are being studied in the treatment of heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, emphysema, diabetes, and more.  While stem cell technology is in its infancy the potential scope of problems stem cells can address is quite amazing.  Stay tuned for more on this exciting technology that’s changing the face of anti ageing medicine.
