The Answer Isn’t Another Pill
Are you looking to obtain good health? Remember this – the answer isn’t another pill.
“We won’t stop being sick until we stop making ourselves sick” so says comedian Bill Maher in this rant against Big Pharma prior to the 2008 Presidential Election that I recently stumbled upon. This may be one of Bill Maher’s best commentaries (since I actually agree with him on most of this one).
The part that struck me the most is, “You see the government isn’t your nanny. They’re your dealer. And they subside illness in America…You see, there’s no money in healthy people, and there’s no money in dead people. The money is in the middle – people who are alive sort of, but with one or more chronic conditions.” He hits it on the head, in my opinion, with that statement.
We’ve said something similar in “Why The Search For The Fountain Of Youth Has Been Beneficial” when we said, “Though, it may not have been intended, we’ve created a health care system that keeps patients alive as long as possible but in a poor state health generating money for hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, laboratories and diagnostic companies, and of course, health care providers. We are probably the “sickest” richest country in history on this planet. There is little disease that we actually cure. We simply “manage it” while making patients feel that they’re getting the best care possible.”
Reflecting more on this overuse of drugs to treat nearly every sign and symptom I have concluded this. We’ve become a society where pharmaceutical drugs have become our food of choice.
We turn many patients into “medical cripples” making them ever more dependent on the healthcare system.
Are You In The Middle – Alive, Sort Of?
Are you sort of alive? If so, you need to understand you can change overnight the direction your health is headed. Results won’t happen overnight, but you can change the direction overnight. Because, unlike other creatures you can think and decide. And with that comes the ability to change course. Change isn’t easy and sometimes it cannot be done alone. In fact, you will likely need help from family/friends in addition to health care professionals to alter the long-term direction your health is headed. Steps Towards Healthy Aging
There’s a time and place for prescription medication, but we are not so poorly designed that we need all this pharmaceutical assistance that doctors prescribe. Physicians have been conditioned to think that nearly every sign and symptom requires a pharmaceutical solution. That simply isn’t true.
Seek out physicians who don’t prescribe medications as part of a knee jerk reaction. Seek out a physician who will sit down with you and will discuss options that address the problem at its core, rather than simply treating symptoms with drugs. Such a discussion should at least include the benefits of exercise and healthy eating along with an exercise and nutrition plan.
If the only action required of you when you leave the doctor’s office is that you open your mouth and swallow a pill – well guess what? You’re going to be alive, sort of. Like anything of value and worth, achieving healthy aging is going to take some work on your end. We now know that 75% of how we age is under our direct control by the lifestyle choices we make. In the end, we are the product of all the decisions we make. Make good choices, take action, live well. Remember – diet and exercise do not fail! The answer isn’t another pill.
