What is Anti Aging?

youthful skinAnti aging (sometimes spelled anti-ageing) refers to treatments or products that partially reverse, or slow down the aging process.

The field of Anti Aging Medicine or Age Management Medicine is a relatively young specialty not yet recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).   Yet, the field continually attracts physicians from all medical specialities searching for a better model for treating patients and promoting optimal health.

Anti Aging Medicine or Age Management Medicine is the fastest growing field in medicine.  This increased interest among physicians in this exciting area is timely as the first wave of Baby Boomers is beginning to retire, and their goal is to stay young, productive, and energetic.

American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine

The American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine (A4M) defines Anti-Aging Medicine, as “Anti-Aging Medicine is a clinical specialty founded on the application of advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases. It is a healthcare model promoting innovative science and research to prolong the healthy lifespan in humans.”

Age Management Medicine

Some physicians contend that we’re going to age despite the best efforts of medicine, but support the concept that the aging process can be managed, and therefore prefer the term “Age Management Medicine”.

The Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG) defines Age Management Medicine as, “Age Management Medicine is a proactive, preventive approach to healthcare for an aging population focused on preservation of optimum human function and quality of life making every effort to modulate the process of aging prior to the onset of degenerative aging.”

Increasing the Health Span

Both groups focus on extending the number of productive or quality years that we each have (increase the health span).  One major shortcoming of traditional or mainstream medicine is that, although, it has increased the lifespan, many of those additional years of life are spent in a poor state of health and in a state of dependency, rather than independency.

Nutrition, Exercise, and Hormonal BalanceWhat is Anti Aging?

While traditional or mainstream medicine focuses on the use of prescribed medications, anti-aging and age management medicine emphasize the role of nutrition, exercise, and hormonal balance to prevent and treat disease, and more readily embrace newer technologies such as stem cell techniques, and telomere lengthening to extend the health span.

Board Certification

Both the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, and the Age Management Medicine Group offer a board certification examination to its physician members, and host several medical conferences throughout the year, and provide other educational activities to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
