What’s the Definition of Libido (Lebido)?

“Libido” is your sex drive.  That’s it. Plain and simple – sex drive.  It’s different from your ability to perform sexually. Libido equals desire. Some people have a strong libido, yet may suffer from sexual dysfunction.

Low libido affects both men and women.  And, to be sure libido is just as important to the female as it is the male in most relationships.

Over-The-Counter Solutions to Low Libido

What Causes Low Libido (Lebido) and What to Do?

Hormones

Low hormone levels are a frequent cause of low libido in men and women.  Testosterone is hormone of sexual desire in both men and women and can improve erectile dyfunction, too.  Low estrogen can also contribute to low libido in women.  Studies have also shown that individuals whose sex hormones are in the lower third of the reference range are at greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.  So the benefits of sex hormones go well beyond the sexual arena, and ultimately affect most aspects of our health.

Even if you don’t mind that your libido is low, it’s smart to be evaluated to see if it’s related to low hormone levels and consider hormone replacement to potentially reduce risk of other diseases.

It’s best to replace hormones with bioidentical hormones, or hormones that are structurally and chemically the same as what the body produces. There are many options available today to replace hormones in both men and women.

Medications

Medication use is a common cause of low libido especially use of SSRI antidepressants.  These drugs are prescribed somewhat casually without identifying the cause of one’s depression.  One cause of depression is guess what? Low sex hormone levels.  Are you beginning to see a connection here?

Another class of drugs linked to low libido is the antihypertensive medications prescribed for high blood pressure.   Never stop your blood pressure medication on your own.  Check with your doctor and see if you can be placed on a lower dose or switched to an alternative medication.

Chronic Disease

Nearly every chronic disease is associated with low libido.  So if you have a chronic disease like diabetes, heart failure, or an autoimmune disorder make sure you are being optimally managed.  A big part of optimal management of any chronic disease is proper nutrition and achieving a better level of fitness.

low lebidioSubstance Abuse

Alcohol and narcotic drug use can adversely affect libido.  Chronic narcotic use can lower testosterone levels, too.  So some individuals need to decide what pleasure is more important to them.

Stress and Fatigue

Stress and fatigue can contribute to low libido.  If stress or fatigue is playing a role in your life seeks out ways to manage stress better.  Regular exercise can reduce stress and improve energy levels in conjunction with a solid nutrition program.  Fatigue has many causes and is best to be evaluated by a doctor. See “Stress and Your Health” and “Battle Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia by Sleeping“.

Regardless if you spell libido “libido” or “libido” don’t ignore the problem. If your libido is low don’t be embarrassed,  you are not alone. The best libido enhancers are hormones, especially testosterone, and that’s true for both men and women.  Talk to your doctor about other ways to increase your libido.
