Natural Memory Enhancer

Do You Remember? Old people are esteemed for their wisdom gained over decades of experience in life. Ironically, they are also noted for their predisposition to forget some things. While talking to your spouse, you stop midway because suddenly you forgot what you were about to say. In a family gathering, your brain rummages through your memory bank for the name of a niece or acquaintance. You can no longer deny that your memory is not as sharp as it used to be and, thus, needs a boost. You may already be taking certain medications for certain ailments and adding a prescription medicine to enhance memory to the list just does not appeal to you. Why not consider a natural memory enhancer?

Going The Natural Route To Remember

Natural memory enhancers can be in the form of certain foods, herbal supplements, and certain physical activities and mental exercises. Memory enhancement begins with the following.

Memory Enhancing Foods

Dark leafy vegetables are known to enhance your powers of recall. Spinach, for example, is teeming with folic acid that helps to boost mental performance. Eat a cup of these or broccoli, cabbage and Swiss chard each day. Remember to not overcook them to preserve their nutritive content.

Salmon, herring, anchovies and mackerel are fatty fish that are high in omega-3. Omega-3 helps decrease the inflammation of the cell which is the cause of deteriorated memory. Three servings of these fish per week are recommended to boost memory retention.

Blueberries and strawberries are also great natural memory enhancers. Strawberries particularly strengthen long term memory, while blueberries help prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Memory-Honing Herbs and Nutritional Supplements

Although not all of them have been backed by studies, herbal and nutritional supplements such as Ginkgo Biloba, phosphatidylserine (a nutrient from soy beans) and pregnenolone (a hormone that is naturally occurring), are believed to improve the ability to remember by increasing the circulation of oxygen to the brain, combating free radicals and advancing the growth of neurons.

Blood-Pumping Physical Activities

Physical exercises can stir nerve cell regeneration that aid in healthy circulatory function. As a result, the brain is well oxygenated, hence, boosting memory and mental performance. Enhance your memory by taking daily brisk walks and by doing stretching exercises.

Brain-Bending Mental Exercises

Also involve your brain in some mental calisthenics to keep memory muscles fit. Play brain teasers, sudoku, crossword and other puzzles and memory exercises. You can also give your brain a workout by enrolling in a class on painting, or other activities or topics that you do not know about.

But before starting on a natural memory enhancer regimen, do not forget to consult your physician about its efficacy, potential undesirable effects and contraindications.
