How to Boost Memory: Try Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a compound that is felt to have anti-aging properties. It’s a polyphenol and a fungicide made by some plants. It is an active compound found in grapes and red wine and thought to be responsible for the French Paradox. Thought to have many health benefits, resveratrol may also boost memory.

We discuss the anti aging properties of resveratrol in Resveratrol Anti Aging. Much of the current focus on resveratrol has been on its metabolic and cardiac benefits. But, any compound can have effects on the whole body and it appears that resveratrol can improve memory and use of glucose by the brain.

Brain Benefits of Resveratrol

A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed that resveratrol in supplemental form improved memory performance, improved glucose metabolism, and increased functional connectivity in the hippocampus in older adults. The study’s researchers concluded, “Our findings offer the basis for novel strategies to maintain brain health during aging.”

It was previously shown that resveratrol in doses of 250 mg to 500 mg enhanced blood flow in the brain. And, typically anything that improves brain blood flow improves brain function.

In the study published in the Journal of Neuroscience men and women ages 50 to 75 were either given 200 mg of resveratrol or a placebo. The study lasted 26 weeks. Memory tests and neuroimaging studies were performed before and after the 26 weeks.

In the resveratrol group there were significant improvements in the retention of words over 30 minutes. Also, lower HgA1C levels were seen in the resveratrol group. HgA1C is a marker for excess glucose. And, the neuroimaging showed increased connectivity between the hippocampus of the brain and the medial prefrontal cortex and that correlated to the increases in memory retention and decreases in HgA1C.

Other Benefits of Resverartrol

Resveratrol does more than boost memory. In addition, to its effects on the brain and sugar metabolism, resveratrol has been linked to increased longevity in yeasts and other lower forms of life. Resveratrol has been shown to lower blood pressure, stimulate breakdown of fats, decrease inflammation in blood vessels, improves cholesterol metabolism, and inhibit clot formation that leads to heart attacks.

So there are plenty of reasons to consider adding resveratrol supplementation to your dietary plan.
