Stress and Your Health

Stress and Your HealthOur lives are progressively getting more stressful, in the last few weeks we have seen  just how bad it can get. Anthony, Arnold, Flo-Rida ( not sure on the last one either) have been the subject of  intense scrutiny and due to it, they most certainly,  are not sleeping as well as they were prior to their slip ups. Not to say, that we all don’t experience stress in our daily lives and while it may not be to the same degree it is still not healthy. Interestingly enough a large percentage of all our stress, just like the boys I mentioned, is of our own making. Medicine is just beginning to realize how hard this stress can be on our health and that we must control it if we want to live long and strong.

Studies on Stress

Recent articles have looked at disease processes including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and stress , you may be surprised what they discovered. When comparing the above they found that stress was worse on your overall health than the others. Most physicians, still don’t accept stress as a significant health hazard , hopefully this study will open a few eyes . Stress may be secondary to work load, financial issues, relationships or just our own unmet expectations. To live a full healthy life relieving stress is one of the of the contributing factors.

We have all been made aware of the hazards of smoking , high blood pressure, diets high in fatty foods, lack of exercise and diabetes. We now must add stress to this list and run it up to the front of the list. This isn’t to say the others are not important, only that stress seems to be terribly hard on our health.

Ways to Combat Stress

Cancel your Facebook acct, stop tweeting and fire the maid!  Much of our stress is the result of our own actions. I have always told my two boys that prior to participating in certain activities they should ask themselves whether or not they would mind reading it on the front page of the newspaper. If the answer is yes they better think twice before acting. Taking certain steps to relieve stress in this manner means taking responsibility for your self, this is step one.

The next step, is to evaluate just how important the other contributing factors are.  This maybe family, financial, relationships or self perception. The  questions to ask your self , Will anyone know I was alive 100 years from now? If you’re honest the answer for the majority of us is NO! That being the case CHILL , it’s not that important.

Finally, there are many doctors recommending meditation as a way to handle the unavoidable stress that we have no control over. Good luck, relax and OHMMMMMM.
